Search Engine Optimization Onpage Factors

Bold, Italic, and Underline

The use of bold, italic, and underline can also give you an advantage over the competition if they are not using them.  Search engines view text which have been bolded, italic, or underlined as more relevant.

When you create quality content for your website it is beneficial to bold your keyword phrase occasionally.  Don't get carried away, make it look neat, clean, and professional.  It doesn't matter how much you please the search engines if you only drive off visitors when they get there.

In general, when using italic it should be used sparingly.  Italic text can be hard to read by viewers.

Alt Image Tags

People like to look at visually pleasing things.  That goes the same with your website.  If it were up to the search engines they could not care a bit about images.  However, since it is very likely that you will include images on your website you should take advantage of the alt image tag.

Alt image tags provide web viewers with information or descriptions about a particular image.  Search  engines will use this tag to read an image and index it with the rest of your website.

Example:<img src="http://www.YourDomain.com/images/logo.gif" alt="search engine optimization" width="728" height="123">

The alt image tag is this part:

alt="search engine optimization"

Keyword Density

Keyword density is the percentage of words on a web page that match your specified keyword phrase.  In the context of search engine optimization, keyword density can be used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword phrase.

In terms of search engine optimization it is hard to determine the right percentage for keyword density.  However, 3% to 5% is generally a good guideline to follow.  Be careful not to use your keyword phrase to much.  Search engines can view this as spam, keyword stuffing.  Focus on writing quality content and things will fall into place.

Keyword Prominence

Prominence is how close to the start of the area that the keyword appears. In general, a keyword that appears closer to the top of the page, toward the beginning of a paragraph, or toward the beginning of a tag will be more relevant. However, sometimes it helps to have a keyword in the middle of an area, or even toward the end of the area.  Again focus on providing valuable information and good content and you will be successful.

Onpage Optimization Don'ts

Don’t include invisible text on your webpage.  That is writing text that is the same color as your background.  Search engines see this and may possibly ban you.

Don’t include several keywords in your Alt image text.  This is also considered spamming and could get you banned.

Don’t repeat your keyword or keywords over and over again in your Meta tags or Title tags.  This is considered spamming as well and could get you banned.  It serves no benefit anyhow since search engine spiders read the content on your web page to determine your topic.
